How to Write an Essay Cover Page in Different Formats

There are only a few academic disciplines that require you to follow a specific format when creating cover page for an essay, article or research paper. Some professors even say that it’s okay to use any as long as it’s a format that is generally recognized in academia. Here are instructions to create an essay cover page in each of the three major academic formats:

MLA Format Cover Page

The standard MLA format cover page, which is generally used in English and the humanities, requires six elements centered down the length of the paper: your university or institution, your essay title, your name, the name of your course, your instructor’s name and the essay’s due date. Skip down to about an inch and half and type the name of your institution, go down about a third of the page and type the name of your essay in a larger font, include any subtitle beneath this in a regular sized font. Skip several more lines and type the remaining information in separate lines.

APA Format Cover Page

The standard APA format cover page, which is generally used in psychology and the social sciences, requires three elements centered down the length of the paper: the title of your essay, your name, and your institution’s name. Each is entered on separate lines about a third of the way down your page. Unlike the MLA format you don’t need to put in your instructor’s name or the essay’s due date. A running header is common in APA formatted papers but should not appear on the title page.

Chicago Format Cover Page

The standard Chicago format cover page, which can be used in the humanities and the social sciences, requires five elements centered down the length of the paper: the title of your essay, your name, your instructor’s name, the name of the course, and the essay’s due date. The title of your essay should be placed about halfway down the page with your name centered immediately beneath. Your instructor’s name, the course name, and date should be written in three lines and centered at the bottom of the page.

There are a dozen more style guides which can be used specifically for certain disciplines. If you are unsure of which format style to use, check with your professor. It’s better to find out before submitting work containing the wrong information.
